Telegram Reaches 950 Million Users Amid Crypto Game Boom

Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, has announced that the platform now has 950 million monthly active users, an increase from 900 million in the spring. Durov credits this surge to the growing popularity of games on Telegram.

These games use The Open Network (TON), a blockchain system originally developed by Telegram and later made open-source for external developers. The gaming trend on Telegram started with Notcoin (NOT), a simple game where players tap to earn in-game coins, which could potentially be converted into crypto rewards. This game attracted millions of users eager to exchange their virtual coins for NOT tokens on TON.

The NOT token officially launched in May 2024, supported by major exchanges like Binance and OKX, marking it as the most significant gaming token event of the year.

Another popular game, Hamster Kombat, with a similar tap-to-earn mechanic, also gained widespread popularity, reaching 100 million users by June. The game even drew attention from the Iranian government, which worried it might distract voters from the presidential election. Hamster Kombat now has over 250 million users.

Following the success of Notcoin and Hamster Kombat, several new crypto games have emerged on Telegram. Games like Yescoin, TapSwap, and Catizen are preparing to launch their own cryptocurrencies on TON, indicating a growing trend in integrating gaming and blockchain technology.

This rapid growth in user engagement and blockchain technology integration in gaming highlights the transformative potential of TON. As more developers explore this ecosystem, Telegram is set to remain at the forefront of social media and decentralized finance. With a user base nearing one billion, the platform’s influence continues to expand, shaping the future of digital interaction and cryptocurrency adoption.
