As the latest measure to curb deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence, a bipartisan group of US senators led by Maria Cantwell of Washington State announced on Thursday the introduction of the "Content Origin Protection and Integrity of Deepfakes (COPIED) Act".

The COPIED Act requires a standardized method for watermarking content generated by artificial intelligence for detection purposes. The Act also requires providers of artificial intelligence tools to allow creators to attach detailed information about the source or "origin" of their content in an unremovable way.

Senator Cantwell stated in a statement that the Act "will provide much-needed transparency for AI-generated content". The COPIED Act will also allow creators, including local journalists, artists, and musicians, to regain control of their content through what I believe are necessary source and watermarking processes.
