Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has turned its attention to federal employees whose wealth does not align with their official salaries. This agency, created by former President Donald Trump, is scrutinizing government workers who earn a few hundred thousand dollars annually but somehow amass fortunes worth tens of millions.
Unexplained Wealth Under Investigation
“It’s a bit strange that within the bureaucracy, there are quite a few people with relatively modest salaries who still manage to accumulate massive wealth,” Elon Musk stated during his address from the Oval Office. “We’re just curious where all this money is coming from.”
Trump Orders Federal Agencies to Cooperate with DOGE
According to an official White House briefing, Trump has issued a directive requiring federal agencies to collaborate with DOGE to significantly reduce the government workforce. The new policy restricts hiring to one new employee for every four who leave, with exceptions for law enforcement, national security, immigration, and public safety.
During a press conference, Musk appeared alongside Trump to elaborate on the DOGE strategy. His agency plans to deploy investigators across federal departments to analyze salary structures, track employees’ assets, and—if necessary—shut down entire offices.
DOGE Uncovers Billions in Fraud and Waste
Trump claimed that DOGE has already identified “billions and billions of dollars in waste, fraud, and abuse.” While no direct evidence was provided, Musk asserted that the U.S. Treasury’s accounting systems lack fundamental safeguards to prevent unauthorized transactions.
“There are essentially blank checks just flying out of the building,” Musk remarked. Additionally, he has been regularly posting examples of government inefficiencies on X, highlighting the misuse of public funds. Although he admitted that some of his claims might be inaccurate, he emphasized the need for transparency.
“If I’m wrong, I want to be proven wrong,” Musk stated. “I want to see that the scale of corruption we’ve uncovered is actually smaller than we think.”
Uncertain Future for Federal Employees
Trump suggested that if necessary, he would push DOGE’s findings through Congress. He also criticized federal judges for blocking some of his past government reform efforts but promised to adhere to legal protocols.
Meanwhile, a Rhode Island judge ruled that the White House had not fully complied with an order to release billions of dollars in federal grant funds.
Mass Layoffs on the Horizon
Federal employees who resist the planned workforce reductions face an uncertain future. Under new policies, laid-off workers may receive up to a year’s salary based on their tenure and age. Some may be reassigned, while others could face immediate dismissal.
Newly appointed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has fully endorsed Musk’s measures, stating that his department will closely collaborate with DOGE. Similarly, Ken Griffin, the founder of Citadel, praised Musk’s efforts to curb government waste.
“I’m grateful that my tax dollars will finally be spent efficiently,” Griffin commented at a financial conference in Miami.
Musk’s Aggressive Approach Is No Surprise
Musk is well-known for his ruthless cost-cutting strategies. In 2018, he laid off 9% of Tesla’s workforce, and in 2023, he slashed another 22%, often notifying employees via emails sent at 2 AM. When he acquired Twitter (now X) in 2022, he dismissed 80% of the company’s workforce—around 6,000 employees.
Now, it seems Musk is ready to apply the same drastic tactics to the federal government.
