😱 Deepfake AI technology is increasingly being used by scammers to con millions of dollars from crypto users, posing a significant threat to the cryptocurrency market. 😳

A Major Incident: $2 Million Stolen from OKX User

Recently, a deepfake AI scam led to the theft of $2 million from an OKX user. The victim, Lai Japanese Fang Chang, reported the incident on June 3. According to WuBlockchain and local media, scammers exploited a data breach on Telegram to obtain Chang’s details, which they used to access his email on OKX through the “forgot password” option.

Posing as Chang, the scammers used a highly realistic deepfake video to change critical security features, including his email ID and Google authenticator. Within a day, they had stolen over $2 million worth of crypto assets from his account.

Deepfake AI: The Cybercriminal’s New Weapon

Deepfake technology can clone a person’s voice, face, and movements, making it a powerful tool for cybercriminals. These artificially created deepfakes are used to spread malicious messages and fake news, making them difficult to counter. The recent fraud at OKX is part of a growing trend of AI-driven scams in the industry, exploiting the security weaknesses of services and their users.

The Rising Threat of AI Scams

Deepfake AI is becoming a common feature in cyber attacks. For example, Fortune reported on OnlyFake, a site that produces realistic fake IDs capable of bypassing know-your-customer (KYC) processes at crypto exchanges like OKX and payment platforms like PayPal.

OKX’s Response and Ongoing Security Challenges

OKX has acknowledged the attack and is cooperating with police to help recover the stolen assets. However, the exchange faces multiple security issues, including page hijacking techniques and API vulnerabilities, which have damaged its reputation.

As AI technology continues to evolve, the cryptocurrency industry must enhance security measures to protect against new types of attacks. Users are also encouraged to adopt robust security practices to safeguard their valuable assets from increasingly sophisticated hackers.
