Aztec, a leading blockchain project, has recently announced a new approach to Layer-2 scaling called Aztec Hybrid zkRollup. This solution aims to integrate both public and private use cases and the development roadmap is expected to last until early 2024.

Aztec is a platform for processing transactions, integrated with Zero-Knowledge (ZK) technology. However, the project has confirmed that it has no plans to implement zkEVM (similar to many notable projects recently).

The project explains that its goal is to “privacy-ify” users’ transactions, which may not always be compatible with the EVM virtual machine system. In explaining the “Hybrid” approach, Aztec stated that it combines the ability to scale applications through a network management approach based on Ethereum’s account-based system and the UTXO mechanism, which supports the privacy of many classic blockchains like Bitcoin.

With this combination, programmers can write contracts similar to the Ethereum experience while ensuring security features in processes such as voting, secure sessions, game development, and secure transactions on AMM.

According to Aztec, the current roadmap includes releasing the public testnet for trial in early 2024. This comes after the project unexpectedly shut down its Connect security bridge project. Many believe this move was due to concerns about harsh policies directed towards privacy projects as many governments are worried that these products may support illegal transactions. The Hybrid zkRollup approach is seen as a way to reduce any potential impact if there are any unexpected changes in the law in the future.

In summary, Aztec’s Hybrid zkRollup is an innovative solution to the Layer-2 scaling problem in blockchain technology. It combines the benefits of account-based and UTXO mechanisms, providing greater privacy and security for users’ transactions. The approach is expected to be tested publicly in 2024 and may have the potential to shape the future of blockchain technology.
