According to Odaily, a Brazilian federal judge has ordered the dismissal of criminal charges against Johann Steynberg, the deceased CEO of the Bitcoin Ponzi scheme Mirror Trading International (MTI). This decision follows a police investigation that confirmed reports of Steynberg's death. His death certificate, which cites acute respiratory failure as the cause, has been added to the case file. The revelation of his death has sparked controversy among some victims, with a few alleging that Steynberg may have faked his demise.

In May, it was reported that the South African National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was investigating accomplices involved in the MTI scheme, which was orchestrated by Steynberg. Isaac Dludlu, the NPA's head of media relations, stated that the prosecuting authority is considering several charges against those implicated, including fraud and forgery.
