On November 25th, the Public Utility Commission of Texas approved a regulation requiring Bitcoin miners using the Texas grid maintained by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to register and share key details of their facilities. Under the new rule passed by the PUCT, Bitcoin miners must share their facility’s location, ownership information, and power requirements with state authorities.
Miners have just one business day to register once their facilities are connected to the ERCOT grid and must renew by March 1st of each year. ERCOT is an independent system operator that handles 90% of the state’s power load. According to PUCT Chair Thomas Gleeson, the new regulation aims to help manage the grid as more mining facilities come online.
Gleeson said, “In order to ensure the reliability of the ERCOT grid and meet the power needs of all Texans, PUCT and ERCOT need to understand the location and power needs of cryptocurrency miners.”
