WalletConnect Foundation, in collaboration with Reown, has introduced two major initiatives—WalletGuide and WalletConnect Certified to make crypto wallets more user-friendly.

WalletGuide serves as a comprehensive resource to help users navigate the world of crypto wallets, while WalletConnect Certified establishes rigorous UX standards for wallet providers, aiming to enhance accessibility and design across the blockchain wallet ecosystem. Currently, 19 wallets, including MetaMask, Ledger, SafePal, and Kraken Wallet, have received this certification.

WalletConnect Focuses on User Experience

Pedro Gomes, director of the WalletConnect Foundation, recently shared insights into the certification’s methodology. “Excellence in onchain UX standards includes several factors decided upon after user feedback and community collaboration,” Gomes noted.

Factors considered include minimizing clicks, reducing transaction friction, and ensuring clear and accessible information. Gomes credited the CAIP-25 standard as an instrumental component in shaping these criteria, emphasizing the ongoing evolution of WalletConnect standards to meet users’ changing needs.

A major obstacle to mass adoption of blockchain technology remains the complexity of its user interfaces, Gomes explained, noting that current blockchain interactions are challenging for the average person. Simplifying these interfaces is essential to making crypto more approachable, but it’s a difficult balance to achieve in an industry that also prioritizes security.

Gomes elaborated, “While blockchain’s technical security needs can sometimes make interfaces complex, UX simplicity is what can bring in new users who are hesitant to engage due to intimidating interfaces.”

Industry-Wide Initiatives

The WalletConnect Foundation’s efforts reflect an industry-wide push to address this usability gap. Reducing interoperability friction and supporting chain abstraction are two key aspects that WalletConnect Certified wallets focus on to create a more seamless user journey. This approach aligns with feedback from both wallet developers and end-users who have long called for more intuitive interactions with decentralized finance (DeFi) and Web3 applications.

As part of the drive to improve user experience, developers such as 0xDesigner have championed the need for “invisible” blockchain technology that’s as simple as using any mainstream app. He likened the current state of many crypto applications to “driving a manual transmission vehicle.” He suggested that to reach the next wave of users, blockchain applications must prioritize ease and invisibility in their design.
