Blockchain gaming is starting to make waves in mainstream gaming circles. Off the Grid, a battle royale game that features loot box extraction mechanics, has become the top performer among the free-to-play options in Epic Games’ store, one of the largest game markets.

Still in its early access stages, the game surpassed already established powerhouses like Rocket League and Fortnite to top the popularity rank on October 11.

Available for consoles and PC, the game allows trios of augmented humans to battle it out in huge arenas. Gunzilla Games, the company behind Off the Grid, is backed by Avalanche, which co-led a $30 million funding round to support game development activities in March.

Gunzilla Games created an Avalanche Subnet, GUNZ, to support the transaction volumes expected for this title. While the game has not launched its token in mainnet, reports indicate that activity has exploded, with a large number of transactions taking place. Nonetheless, Gunzilla Games plans to allow players to establish a game economy with items becoming non-fungible tokens (NFTs), effectively creating a blockchain-based marketplace.

While other Web3 games have reached some popularity, Off the Grid’s momentum has not been matched by other AAA alternatives even with the support of top gaming companies that have tried to introduce blockchain elements in their IPs. Nonetheless, the complete introduction of these features is still a work in progress, and there is no definitive date for the full game release, as it only includes a single, yet large, map at the time of writing.
