Somalia has banned cryptocurrency-friendly messaging app Telegram, along with TikTok and online-betting site 1XBet. The Ministry of Communications and Technology (MOCT) announced the decision on August 20, stating that the government is "working to preserve the culture of Somali society" and that these platforms have "affected lifestyles and increased bad habits." The ban also aims to limit the spread of indecent content and propaganda. It is unclear whether this decision will have any implications for cryptocurrency adoption in Somalia, where investing in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin is not banned.
