The Ethereum (ETH) network is expected to witness one of the largest upgrades in its history.
As the implementation of the “Prague-Electra” upgrade, or what it is called and abbreviated in English (Pectra), is approaching.
This upgrade aims to enhance security, scalability and performance, building on the achievements of the Cancun-Denb upgrade.
Upgrade schedule and implementation details:
While the final activation date and specific agenda for the upgrade are still under discussion, expectations are that the Pectra upgrade will be among the most significant updates to Ethereum's design.
Ethereum developers have already approved five Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIP) for inclusion in this upgrade.
Researcher Anthony Sassano shared a list of improvement suggestions expected to be included in the Pectra upgrade.
These proposals aim to improve multiple aspects of the Ethereum network, most notably the following:
EIP-7702: This proposal will replace the current account abstraction mechanism in Ethereum (ERC 4337), improving how accounts interact with smart contracts.
EIP-7594: Known as peer data availability sampling, this proposal enhances scaling opportunities for Ethereum's Layer 2 (L2) clusters.
EIP-7251: This proposal would raise the stake limit in Ethereum's Proof of Stake (PoS) system, providing operable exits for participants.
EIP-2537: This proposal adds functionality to improve the performance of operations using the BLS12-381 curve, including BLS signature verifications.
EIP-7549: Aims to make consensus voting procedures more efficient by reducing the average number of pairings required to verify consensus rules.
It is expected that the “Pectra” hard fork upgrade will be activated in the first quarter of 2025.
While some sources indicate that the fourth quarter of 2024 may also be a possible timing for activating the upgrade, the first quarter of 2025 appears to be the most likely according to experts.
