Belgium, currently presiding over the Council of the European Union, has abandoned the controversial Chat Control 2 proposal, which aimed to mass surveil messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal. The legislation, intended to use AI to detect child sexual abuse material, was dropped after it became clear it wouldn't pass. Critics, including Aleph Zero co-founder Matthew Nimerg, argued that the law would infringe on citizens' rights and be more invasive for ordinary users than criminals. Despite the setback, there are concerns the legislation could be revived in a different form.
