Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is aiming to speed up transactions on the Ethereum network, potentially reducing layer-1 confirmations from seconds to milliseconds. Buterin proposed a move from Ethereum’s current epoch-and-slot mechanism to a single-slot finality system (SSF) in a recent blog post. The Ethereum Merge, which is the shift from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, has already reduced transaction confirmations to 5-20 seconds. Buterin believes there is potential to further speed up transactions. He suggests changing the slot-by-slot finality to single-slot finality, similar to the Tendermint consensus. However, this comes with challenges, including increased network congestion.
