BTC dominance shows the Bitcoin market cap compared to the overall capitalization of the top coins. Currently, Bitcoin holds the largest share of the market.
This metric ranges between 0% (lowest possible BTC dominance) and 100% (highest).
When bitcoin dominance rises, i.e. bitcoin’s market cap (price x coin supply) is increasing relative to the market cap of other cryptos, bitcoin is gaining market share vs other altcoins. At this time investors would generally be better off owning bitcoin than higher risk altcoins.
By the way, the bitcoin price can drop while the dominance is rising. In these cases, bitcoin price just drops less than alternative coins.
And when bitcoin dominance drops bitcoin is getting weaker versus the broader altcoin market.
Thus, BTC dominance can trend higher in bear markets because investors sell riskier altcoins for safer bitcoin. It can also rise in bull markets when bitcoin leads the rally.
