ETHEREUM ($ETH) FUTURE ROADMAP
Vitalik Buterin's recent 31,000-word series of blog posts provides an in-depth look at Ethereum’s future roadmap, marking a significant development as Ethereum faces new market challenges. His posts build on the roadmap initially set out in 2022, tackling Ethereum's scalability and long-term goals amid shifting sentiment and market performance.Ethereum has lagged behind Bitcoin and Solana this year, and some community members question the network's focus on layer 2 (L2) solutions like Arbitrum, Optimism, Starknet, and ZKsync. While these L2s aim to enhance scalability, their tokens have struggled in 2024, experiencing sharp declines—Arbitrum by 66%, Optimism by 56%, Starknet by 84%, and ZKsync by 55%. Analysts, including GSR's Thomas Bautista, attribute these drops to increased token circulation and the resulting sell pressure, with more token unlocks expected in the future. In the meantime, Solana has seen innovation in the form of its liquid staking project, Jito, which quickly reached a $25 million cap through its restaking protocol. Restaking, which allows tokens to secure multiple networks, is gaining attention for potentially higher rewards. Although Ethereum saw a peak in its own restaking sector earlier this year, it has since declined amid Ether price dips and issues with EigenLayer, its top restaking protocol. The future of Ethereum now appears closely tied to its success in addressing L2 scaling challenges, the continued development of staking protocols, and overcoming market pressures on L2 tokens. Buterin’s vision may provide guidance, but Ethereum faces a competitive and evolving ecosystem.
